Why are only cows collared?

Go to Home Page

Most of the collars on the Porcupine Caribou Herd are on cows. Currently, there are almost 50 conventional collars on caribou, and about 10 of these are on bulls. We have another 20 collars to be put out on cows later in the winter.

Mostly cows are collared because the main reasons for keeping collars on this herd are to document calving rates, and so that the caribou can be found for the census. We can expand the proportion of collared cows which give birth and keep their calves to the whole herd.Cow with radio collar

Bull on the North SlopeDuring the census, it is the cows which form large groups near the north coast, while the bulls tend to be in the foothills. It is very important for us to find the cows.
