As you can imagine, conducting a satellite-locating project is very expensive. Fortunately, there are many different organizations that help share the costs. The first 10 collars used in this program had originally been put on wolves on the Yukon North Slope in the early 1990's. These collars were purchased using funds from the Yukon Territorial Government Inuvialuit Final Agreement Wildlife Research Program, with agreement from the Wildlife Management Advisory Council (North Slope). A number of agencies "adopted" collars, or contributed the costs of operating the collar. The original collars were refurbished, then deployed during fall and early winter of 1997, and had a lifespan of 18 months. During March and June of 1999, the caribou were recaptured and fitted with new satellite collars that were bought by Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Since that time, we have had to recapture some of the caribou again to replace collars and have captured 3 additional caribou. Costs associated with this program include (in Canadian dollars): ![]()
